BUILDING THE INFORMATION STATION

For a number of years, the USDA Forest Service Carson Pass Information Station was located in a converted forest service outhouse.  Because that facility was totally in-
adequate, it was decided that a new, larger structure was needed.  This decision led to building a new facility (shown above) next to the parking lot at Carson Pass on Highway 88. That was done with mostly volunteer labor.

Building a log structure in the mountainous snow country involved an interesting learning process.  To see what was involved, go to the Building the Station page. That page plus the Some Construction Details page will give you an idea of what is involved in building a log structure in mountainous snow country.  We obviously learned enough that we were able to build the station and even get an Award for doing so.

MAINTAINING THE INFORMATION STATION

Now that the Information Center is essentially constructed, our concern has turned to the maintenance of the structure and surrounding grounds.  See what is involved in Maintaining the Station.

STAFFING THE INFORMATION STATION

As noted above, the Information Center is staffed seven days a week during the summer visitor season by at least two volunteers.  Those volunteers who live some distance away from Carson Pass are permitted to stay in the Silver Lake Cabin while "on duty."  See Staffing the Station for further information about volunteering to staff the Station.

CAMPING IN THE CARSON PASS AREA

Camping in the area accessible from Carson Pass in now limited.  For information on these limits, see the Camping in the Carson Pass Management Area page.

TRAILS & PLACES

There are many places to go to in the Carson Pass area. Some of these involve easy day hikes, some involve more strenuous workouts.  All provide views of the wonderful scenery.  To learn where some of these wonderful places are, visit the Trails & Places page.
