HELPING THE ELDORADO NATIONAL FOREST SERVE THE PUBLIC

AWARDS

ENFIA and its members have been given a number of awards for service to the Eldorado National Forest.   One type of award received is the 1,000 hour pin.

1,000 HOUR PIN
A 1,000-HOUR PIN
Eight ENFIA volunteers have received this pin for donating 1,000 hours or more to the Forest Service.   These include Dick Brock, Steve Dowty, Valerie Dowty, Art Edwards, Alice Hawker, Joel Knowles, Mary Knowles, and Lola Schuette.  1,000 hours is the equivalent of 25 forty-hour work weeks.
Art Edwards no longer is active in ENFIA because of his age and his move to Pacific Grove where he is a docent at the Monterey Aquarium.   We were sorry to have Art move because he is the one person most responsible for starting ENFIA.   In addition, Art spent many hours at the Carson Pass Information Station in the days before we had the large number of people who now donate their time to staff the facility.   Art's move was a big loss to ENFIA.

Alice, or Janie Hawker lived for a number of years in Sacramento. Up until her move from Sacramento to Petaluma, Janie was very active in staffing the Carson Pass Information Station.   She would take her water color painting supplies when she went up to the pass and spend her "free time" painting landscapes.   Unfortunately for ENFIA Janie's health made it necessary for her to move closer to her daughter.   Her health and residential location now make it impossible for Janie to continue staffing the Carson Pass Station.   That is ENFIA's loss.

The other 1,000-hour pin awardees continue to serve ENFIA and the Eldorado National Forest.   Several are approaching 3,000 hours of donated volunteer time.

CHIEF'S VOLUNTEER PROGRAM NATIONAL AWARDS

"The Chief's Volunteer Program National Awards" are given each year to a limited number of organizations and individuals in recognition of their contribution to the National Forest Service.   In 1999, ENFIA and Joel Knowles received such awards.

On June 5th, some 20 ENFIA and Eldorado National Forest personnel gathered at the Institute of Forest Genetics to receive their awards.   ENFIA was selected for an award in the Sponsored Volunteer Service category in recognition of the contribution ENFIA has made to the Eldorado National Forest.

Joel Knowles was given an award as one of six national awardees in recognition of his contribution to the Eldorado National Forest.   Joel has contributed countless hours to the Forest as the construction manager for the Carson Pass Information Station.   In addition, Joel has helped with the Traverse Creek restoration project, the Bridal Veil Interpretive Trail, the Silver Lake Volunteer's Cabin, and countless other ENFIA and Forest projects.
